The biggest and most famous ultra-marathon in the world. This was the
'birth-place' of RaceTec. The race has IT requirements of unprecedented
complexity and magnitude. The finish area is in a stadium. There are
approximately 70 computers in various positions - information, media, referees,
medical, operations and VIP. There is a 13 hour live TV broadcast of the race
which demands live times from 6 splits en-route. The medical setup has 40
doctors, using 20 wireless PDAs to track who is in what bed. Up to 100,000 SMSs
are sent out to friends and family wanting to track their runner. Just as many
SMSs are received for the charity competitions. The RaceTec database is
replicated to 4 powerful servers, 2 of which run the tracking website which gets
more than 2,000,000 queries on race day. More than 2kms of network cabling are
laid. Calculating results produces 500,000 database transactions in 5 seconds,
every 30 seconds. RaceTec handles all of this without even blinking. On top of
all this, RaceTec handles all entries, including the full historical record of
the race from 1921. That's 385,000 entrants over 85 years. All their personal
details, splits and results. This is what RaceTec was designed for - IT
requirements beyond any other race. If it can cope with this, imagine how easily
it will cope with your race.

RaceTec has been used at Ironman Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and
Western Australia. It performs faultlessly for the full 17 hour duration, with
final results being available immediately after the cutoff. Commentator displays
run simultaneously at any number of timing points, with remote timing points
uploading splits continuously throughout the day. Live data is pushed to
IronmanLive.com continuously, and SMS messages are sent out live throughout the
day.
